A potential mining partnership between the United States and Brazil is gaining traction around critical minerals, particularly rare earths, as the two nations move to rebuild ties. Brazil, the world’s second-largest holder of rare-earth reserves after China, sees a strategic alliance with Washington as a way to accelerate its critical minerals agenda. Such cooperation could challenge China’s dominance in the sector while spurring investment in domestic refining and magnet manufacturing in Brazil, creating mutual economic and geopolitical gains.

After The New York Times revealed that US President Trump authorized the CIA to carry out covert actions in Venezuela, the Bolivarian regime in Caracas issued a fierce response. “How long will the CIA's coups d'état continue?” wondered President Nicolás Maduro, who linked this news to past South American coups and denounced the policy as a pursuit of “regime change.” Additionally, the Chavista government expressed “extreme alarm,” calling the authorization a “very serious violation of international law and the United Nations Charter” and a risk to regional stability. Caracas asserted that the ultimate goal of the policy is to “appropriate Venezuelan oil resources” and warned that the US is also attempting to “stigmatize Venezuelan and Latin American migration.”

OUT 16, 2025 - Global Trade

Government officials and business executives from Brazil and India are meeting in New Delhi this week, aiming to triple their US$ 12 billion trade partnership, according to a report from Yahoo Finance. The meeting comes as economists warn that the trade policies of President Donald Trump could reduce the countries’ economic growth by about one percentage point. The Brazilian delegation, led by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, will discuss potential partnerships with Indian business leaders in areas including agribusiness, biofuels, and defense. The delegation includes executives from oil giant Petrobras, mining company Vale SA, and food processor BRF SA.

In Lima, Peru, electricity to the city of 10 million is controlled by just two companies, China Southern Power Grid International (CSGI) and China Three Gorges Corporation. Both are state-owned enterprises based in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Peru is not alone in this story. In neighboring Chile, Chinese companies account for roughly two-thirds of power distribution, while in Brazil, China has poured billions into electricity transmission projects. These investments curtail strategic autonomy and shape the options available to countries for housing and industrial policy, and, in a worst-case scenario, could be actively weaponized by the PRC.
